Los Pintores De La Expedicion De Alejandro Malaspina Set Volumes 1 & 2

The reign of Carlos III was ending and on September 10, 1788, the frigate captains Alejandro Malaspina and José de Bustamante proposed the organization of a trip to study the flora, fauna, ways of life, the political, commercial and defensive situation. from overseas lands and, at the same time, collected materials typical of natural sciences for the Royal Cabinet. The expedition approved in 1778 and begun in  July 1, 1789. The first volume recounts the itinerary followed by said expedition, commenting on the scientific work carried out in each place. The second volume contains a catalog of all the drawings and paintings of which the author has news. 

The books also provides  extensive biographies on eight painters who were either office or associated for a portion of the voyage and a catalogue of their works. By locating and using with great authority documentation concerning the painters of this scientific expedition, Sotos Serrano has produced a monumental work. Some 830 scientific drawings are reproduced and technically described. This two-volume work is an essential tool for the understanding of the workings of such scientific expeditions.
